November 26 is celebrated as the National Milk Day which also marks the 97th birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurian. He was a visionary who transformed the milk deficit India into the largest milk producing country in the world. In the name of White Revolution Dr Kurien visualized the project and the Government of India took initiative for this dairy development movements. It was supported by the government to develop and help the dairy industry sustain itself economically by developing co-operative societies , while providing employment to the poor farmers.
The White Revolution was a major transformation for the lives of women farmers empowering them with financial independence .Modern technology was introduced into the sector through this.
Dr. Verghese Kurien was at that time the chairman and founder of AMUL, who was also the Chairman of NDDB and was also recognised as the architect of Operation Flood.
Under Verghese Kurien, the programme created national milk grid linking producers throughout India with consumers in over 700 towns and cities, reducing seasonal and regional price variations and ensuring that the milk producers get a major share of the income generated from end consumers, by forming co-operatives. He also invented the production technology of milk powder .
Dr. Kurien who transformed entire concept of milk procuring and producing into techno savvy project is really acknowledged as a man with courage and commitment. With the same commitment and courage we need to check the milk adulteration as it is one the major health issues we are facing today.
