West Indies batsman Chris Gayle was awarded A$300,000 ($220,770) in damages by an Australian court after he won a defamation case against Fairfax Media over an alleged sexual allegation incident during the 2015 World Cup.
Fairfax Media had published articles alleging Chris of exposing himself to a masseuse during the world cup. In October 2017, a jury found Fairfax had failed to establish the truth of the reports. It also found Fairfax had failed to establish that the allegation Gayle had propositioned the masseuse was “substantially true”.
The court also felt that the media had wrong intention of maligning a reputed batsman by publishing such news. This allegation had invited so much of uproar from across the globe. The Fairfax Media is planning to appeal the verdict.
