Pirelli, the tyre manufacturer showcased a tyre that can ‘interact’ with the 5G network. Pirelli is now the world’s first tyre company to transmit information detected by intelligent tyres about the road surface via the 5G network.
The demonstration for the cyber tyre, undertaken by Pirelli, Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Italdesign, and KTH, showed a vehicle equipped with the sensor-fitted Pirelli Cyber Tyre and connected to the 5G network was able to transmit the risk of aquaplaning identified by the tyres to a following car.
In a press release, Pirelli noted, “The “sensoring” of tyres is an integral part of Pirelli’s “Perfect Fit” strategy, focused on the development of “tailor made” products and services to meet the needs of carmakers, fleets and drivers in general, with a view to the future and the changes underway in mobility.”
Pirelli has equipped the Cyber Tyre with an internal sensor that will, some time in the future, provide the car with data not only about the tyre model, kilometers done, etc. but also about potentially danger situations on the road, including poor grip, presence of water, and more. The information thus supplied to the car will allow it to adjust driving and control assistance systems, thus enabling substantially better levels of safety and performance.
